The Strathisla distillery is located in the historic peaceful town of Keith in Speyside, Scotland. Chivas Brothers claims that the distillery is older than any other distillery in the Highlands, founded in 1786 near the ancient Fons Bulliens well. This pure spring well is the source of the clear and fresh water used in making Strathisla single malt whisky that eventually goes into Chivas Regal blended Scotch whisky.
Today Strathisla distillery treasures many of the traditions and distilling methods first laid down over 200 years ago. The same care and attention is given to the selection of the finest raw ingredients, and the same respect is known in the care and upkeep of the timber vats and gleaming copper stills.
Visitors can tour the recently refurbished distillery. Take a unique, self-guided route through the distillery where you can test the knowledge of the distillery staff about the skills and traditions of whisky making.
Visiting the distillery provides the rare opportunity to experience the process of milling, mashing, fermentation and distillation. (Making Scotch Whisky)
In addition to observing the complete process of making the spirit, the distillery tour also includes a lesson in the art of "nosing" and an introduction to the principles of blending. (Tasting Scotch Whisky)
Meticulous restoration has returned the old distillery to its original character. The distillery includes the Isla Room where guests can relax with coffee and shortbread.
The Dram Room featuring a grand Victorian fireplace and original 19th century fittings, the Strathisla gift shop, a courtyard, and the reception area with preservd equipment showing the gradual development of this company from its modest beginnings as high-class grocers in Aberdeen to "purveyors of fine whiskies to the Royal Family" and finally to creators of many of the famous Chivas Regal whisky.
On the wall of the reception area, visitors can still see the original Chivas Brothers sign from their old shop in Union Street, Aberdeen.
The tall glass cabinet contains other Chivas Brother artifacts and curiosities, many more than 100 years old, including one of the first-ever bottlings of Chivas Regal.
